14 OctThe Environment’s Influence on Genes

Many people think that genes are the only thing that influences the phenotype, or looks, of an organism. This in not true because the environment influences genes too. This means where an organism lives plays a part in how they look. The temperature in an environment will change an organism’s pigment. For example, the wings on the map butterfly’s wings are determined by if the butterfly becomes an adult in the spring or summer.  Another example of the environment’s role in genes is about hydrangeas:

Although both these flowers may have the same genes, the pigments are different because of the soils they grew in.
