These past few week we have been learning about different poets. We were each assigned one, and I was assigned Emily Dickinson. She was born on December 10th, 1830,in Amherst, Massachusetts. Emily Dickinson published over 1800 poems. She was educated in college for seven years at Amherst University. Emily Dickinson was never married and lived in solitude. She died on May 15th, 1886. She never knew that her poems would be read by millions. In 1890, four years after Emily’s death, her sister Lavinia found hundreds of poems by Emily. From that year onward they began to be published. In 1955, a book of her poems became published.
Dickinson poems are about many things, Nature, Love, Medicine, Animals, Immortality, and Death. She expresses her world of solitude and sadness in her poems. Like in this next poem, hope being destroyed and flying away. Her poems really describe the life she was living in New England. I really join stepping into the life of Emily Dickinson. Her poems have this flow to them that I love.
“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all –
And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard –
And sore must be the storm –
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm –
I’ve heard it in the chillest land –
And on the strangest Sea –
Yet – never – in Extremity,
It asked a crumb – of me.
To me this poem has a big symbol. It symbolizes hope and how hope works. Hope is kind of like a certain people have hope at different times, but in migrate and leave. You can be left in the winter with all the birds gone, as if they have taken hope with them. Certain things trigger hope, which helps guide you through life. But it isn’t like you can just repay hope with bread or something. Hope is an emotion that must be kindled.
Tomorrow,in class I will recite this poem. I have studied multiple times and believe I can get a one hundred. Mrs. Teitelbaum is going to have chocolate and dim lights. Most of my friends poems are shorter than mine, but not all. I wanted to make into a scored contest, but Mrs. Teitelbaum did not like that idea. When I recite it I am not going to mumble or skip a line. My words will flow and I will look directly at the audience, I think I will get a hundred on this grade.
