Kennedy Space Center

I recently visited the Kennedy Space Center, known as NASA. I HIGHLY recommend going there! I went there with the 4th and 5th grade classes. We got to choose a parent or guardian to go with us. I chose my dad because he likes to learn about space. We saw movies and went on rides and SOOOO many other things. They showed us actual rockets, and what the astronauts stayed in. They also showed us a piece of the moon. I learned about so many things, and that is what I am going to share with you.

I enjoyed SO many things, such as a 45 minute movie called The Hubble IMAX, the simulator, the big gift shop, the bus tour, the museum that had a HUGE spaceship inside, the rocket garden, viewing the EXACT control room used years ago, and of course… EVERYTHING else!

Right before the simulator, there was a TV that showed some astronauts that were talking, and one said, “We were going up into space, and my face started hurting. Why is my face hurting?” he said, and then he realized it was because he was smiling SOOO much!  When I was on the simulator, it showed us how it felt to go up to space. Guess what? My face started hurting because I was laughing and smiling so much… I now know how he felt.

image-1It is unbelievable how much I learned. I learned that the NASA building station is the largest one story building IN THE WORLD, that the hubble telescope needed to be fixed many years ago, the space station is as wide as two football fields, and as long as three football fields, and the largest hand-painted flag in America is on the NASA building station.

Not only that, but a spaceship is bigger than two Statue of Liberties, Hubble pictures can travel billions of trillions of miles into space, the rocket that lifts the spaceship into space detaches after the spaceship is in space, and over 1,300 cameras are hidden on the NASA property. I could tell more, but I can’t remember all the details and facts.

I had a wonderful time at NASA, and again, I highly recommend going there! I loved looking around at artifacts and such, and learning new facts too! If you do go there, I hope you enjoy it! Have you ever gone to the Kennedy Space Center or want to go? What would you do if you went to the Kennedy Space Center?

Kibbutz Negba

Posted in 5th grade, History on April 18th, 2013 by Evie! — Be the first to comment!

image“What is Kibbutz Negba?” you might say. Kibbutz Negba is a place that long ago, Egypt attacked. It was thirty days after Israel became a state. David Ben Gorion and the government agreed that the Jews can go wherever they want in Israel. The states around them did not like this, so they declared war. Egypt was one of the attackers. No state is ever allowed to have an army until it is a state. Although Israel didn’t have an army, they asked people that if they did become a state, would they be in the army, this was called the Hagannah. imageSome men agreed and started training. Israel did become a state, and they did have an army after. They sent the children away to a place where they will not be harmed. So when those thirty days came by, other Arab states started attacking. One attack lasted for a month. Let’s get back to Kibbutz Negba. They dug tunnels the day after they became a state, so that the Kibbutz members could go in them if there was a bombing. Fortunately, they finished building the tunnels, and they needed them. That was when Egypt started attacking Israel. The war ended and Israel won. They celebrated, sang, danced, and got their children back.

imageThere is a really good video about what happened and I highly recommend watching it. It is black and white so if you don’t like those, you don’t have to watch it. Here is the link:

Some Goals That The Teachers Gave Me

Posted in 5th grade, Portfolio, reflections, SLC, teachers on April 17th, 2013 by Evie! — Be the first to comment!

I think that the goals that my teachers gave me are very fair. Some goals that Mrs. Teitelbaum (my Language Arts teacher) gave me are to study every week for Wordly Wise and/or Spelling, and read for 15-30 minutes EVERY DAY. Morah Liat (my Hebrew teacher) gave me a goal that is to use my creativity to enhance my Hebrew. Mrs. Zavon (my Math and Social Studies teacher) said that my goals is to work in the enrichment folder she made for me. Again, I think that they are very fair, and they will help me go through the next nine weeks.

Did I Reach My Goals For This Year?

Posted in 5th grade, Portfolio, reflections, SLC on April 16th, 2013 by Evie! — Be the first to comment!

I have reached some of my goals, but not all of them. Some goals that I reached this year is staying on Patrol, not getting too many debits, getting better at blogging, and last but not least, I had fun. Some goals that I didn’t reach this year is that I didn’t get all A’s all year, and I didn’t try my hardest. I really wish I did, though. I have a link to my recording of my goals for this year. I also have a QR code.

Jewish Studies Artifacts

I am not very well in Hebrew, and did an AMAZING job on this. It is on my parsha that I was to do a summery on. I had Morah Mazal’s help. I think that I prepared wonderfully. My parsha was about how Jacob tricked Esau to give him his father’s blessing. Jacob was the younger twin so he did not get the blessing until he did the trick. Jacob got the blessing without being caught by his father because his father was blind. That is how Jacob got his father’s blessing. I am proud of this because I worked hard, came up witha great activity (You have 15 minutes to come up with a skit about a part of the parsha),  I had no spelling and grammer mistakes, and best of all, I had fun making it. My goals for the next nine weeks is to pay more attention in class, print out the Jewish Studies hw more often, and interact in the class more.

My goals for the next nine weeks in math is to work on the extra-credit packet more often and study for tests and quizzes more too.

Surviving Jamestown

Surviving-jamestown-1I recently finished the book Surviving Jamestown. I would rate it 4 1/2  stars. It tells you about how people survived, and died in Jamestown. Not only that, the story tells you about something else. Read on to find out!

This book is about a young boy who experiences the journey to, and at Virginia. The boy’s name was Sam Collier. Sam Collier was a real boy, and he was also John Smith’s page. When the colonists reached Jamestown, they had to work very hard in order to build a fort before winter came. Many people got sick and some eventually died. Sam and his master both got very sick, but fortunately, they didn’t die. Once everyone was strong again, they continued working. John Smith, Sam, and other men soon went to explore the land around the upcoming fort. They met many Indians and some tribes were polite and showed them around other tribes. When the colonists came back, something terrible happened… One of Sam’s friends died, and the fort got partly destroyed.

After ththumbn_1564898810at, John Smith, Sam, and some other men thought that while some of the Indians were treating the exploration party like idols, other Indians attacked the fort. Soon, some Indians came and said, “Wingapoh!” which meant, “Friends! We come in peace!” John Smith ordered the guards not to fire at them. They talked to each other by hand gesturing. The Indians said that they heard about the attack, and that it wasn’t them. They also said that they would try to help and that the colonists should clear out the land around them so that the other Indians would have no place to hide. All ended okay after that.

I’m sure that you are wondering, “Who was that person who died that was Sam’s friend? What will happen to the fort? What is going to happen next?” The only way you will know is by reading the book, because I am not going to tell you the answers. I do recommend this book and if you do read it, I hope you enjoy it! Remember the title is Surviving Jamestown!
