6th Grade

screen-shot-2016-12-09-at-2-06-07-pmWe are continuing to read our current class novel  Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie.  We each wrote an essay in our composition books explaining how the Harper family has been affected by Jeffery’s diagnosis.  We shared our essays in class.  We worked on finding figurative language examples throughout the story. Here are a couple:

  • you could hear the tick, tick, tick of the property values dropping as passersby took it the tableau of horror (onomatopoeia and metaphor)
  • it was like they were planning a space mission (simile)

We continued to add to our vocabulary list, and we have a total of 30 words to review for our quiz next week.  We reviewed (or learned) how to create a quizlet for studying. We also took our prefix quiz on Friday

We are continuing to read our current class novel Freak the Mighty. It is getting quite suspenseful.  We make daily predictions in class and we discuss the plot thoroughly.  We have been identifying vocabulary words within each chapter.  We are creating our own quizlet to prepare for a cumulative vocabulary quiz next week on the words in the book.  We have also been working on daily comprehension questions in class.

In addition, our final drafts for the Science Fair research papers were due today.  We had a vocabulary test today too.

We also reviewed run-on sentences.  We reviewed how to determine whether we need a comma, a semi-colon or a conjunction in a sentence.

8th Grade

This week, the 8th graders have done a few things.  At the beginning of the week, we finished the expository essays that we had been working on which you can read on our blogs.  After that, we started working on a new project for figurative language.  Some of us are creating movies, some of us are creating songs or finding examples in existing songs, and some of us are creating board games. These projects are due next week. On Friday we took a test for the prefixes that we have been learning this week.
