This week is language arts we learned about prepositions. A preposition is a word that shows a relationship between a noun and another word. Some words that can be prepositions are; about, for, to and around etc… We are also having a vocabulary and spelling test tomorrow. Some of the 8th grade students are reading The Book Thief  and others are reading The Endless Steppe. In The Endless Steppe,  Esther and the majority of her family just arrived at Rubtsovk in Siberia after the Russians took her family.

This week in Language Arts, we did a lot of writing! We reviewed our grammar skills from previous years, took a test for our spelling/vocab words, and we started writing realistic fiction stories! Our word of the week this week was Affinity. Noun ~A feeling of closeness and understanding that someone has for another person because of their similar qualities, ideas, or interests. An example sentence is: “I have a very strong affinity for video games.” By: Jack H

84This week went by fast! We started reading the first chapter of the Outsiders, It is about the sixties. We learned about a lot of the characters and the groups known as the Greasers and Socs. We have done so much stuff this week! We started our first class book, our first writing assignment, and so much more. Now here’s more information on our week.

We started reading our first class book, The Watsons go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis. The Watsons go to Birmingham is a Coretta Scott King award winning book, and in my opinion, so far it is really good. Today we finished the second chapter; the book is about a young boy and his family who live in Flint, Michigan, but they go and visit their grandma in Birmingham, Alabama. Mrs. Teitelbaum gave us two packets to fill out while we read the book. One has new vocabulary words that we learn while reading the chapters. The second one has a few questions to fill out to make sure that we comprehend each chapter. I have really high hopes for this book.

We also started our first writing project. We are writing personal narratives which are stories written from our point of view. My personal narrative is about a scary camping trip that I went on this summer at Camp Ramah Darom. I love learning about the different things that my friends have experienced, and personal narratives are a perfect way to learn more about them.

The part of speech that we are learning is verbs. We have discussed action verbs and helping verbs. We also learned a helpful song to remember the words that are helping verbs. We also have a vocabulary test Friday on our three words of the week and five root words. Our words are: Astro, Aud, Auto, Bene, Bio, Abhor, Absolve, and Adept. Wish us luck!
