The sixth graders started the novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. It is based on a true story that takes place in Sudan. This is the story of an eleven-year-old boy, Salva, who goes on a long trek after being separated from his family in 1985. Salva wonders the African landscape for more than a thousand miles on foot before finding safe haven in the United States in 1996. The novel is also includes the heartfelt tale of Nya, a young Sudanese girl who devotes her days to an unending quest for water. The students researched the history of Sudan and other important information relevant to the novel. The students shared the information with the class. The students completed vocabulary activities correlating with the book, as well. In addition, the students have learned about gerunds in grammar.
