Loving Literacy

We started our novel study on The Giver by Lois Lowry in sixth grade.  I absolutely LOVE teaching this book because of its rich vocabulary words.  We are only on chapter six, but on Friday, the students BEGGED for homework.  They wanted me to assign more chapters to read.  They asked me to assign at least three chapters because they said they just “couldn’t wait” to find out what will happen next. We have been having fun completing daily vocabulary activities and thought-provoking reflections.  The new homework for this week is posted on the sixth grade page.

The seventh and eighth graders are LOVING the book Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnebuck which we started last week. I haven’t read this book, but I received several recommendations.  We are also working hard on Science Fair research papers.  The students have already found their sources and learned to cite them properly.  All seventh and eighth graders must turn in their official Works Cited page this Tuesday.

My other eighth graders are enjoying Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper.  It is such an amazing book about a young girl who suffers from Cerebral Palsy.  The Seventh and Eighth grade vocabulary assignment for this week is posted in Google Classroom and is due on Monday, October 13.  Last week’s vocabulary is due tomorrow.
