  • Explain in your own words what you think the 3rd precept means.  “Have no friends not equal to yourself.”   —Confucius

7th Grade & 8th Grade

Today we started to read a short story called “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” from The Jungle Book (1894) by Rudyard Kipling about the adventures of a valiant young mongoose.

  • Based on what we read in class today, write down a description of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and predict what will happen tomorrow.

  1. Shelby.W says:

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, the main character of the story is a mongoose. He’s no ordinary mongoose though, he’s a curious little fellow. He like to roam around, jump out at every noise he hears, and to meet new animal friends. In fact, he met a family of birds who lost their child because he fell out of the nest and was eaten. I think that the all curious Rikki-Tikki-Tavi will help find out who ate the son.

•dad is fine with rikki-tikki-tavi being in the room because the dad thinks that if a •snake came in the room he would die
    •received egg for breakfast
•rikki-tikki-tavi went into the garden and saw many plants
•rikki-tikki-tavi smelled the very strong smells of plants
•rikki-tikki-tavi saw darsi’s nest and she was crying because one of her kids fell out of the nest and was eaten

I think that tomorrow we will find out who killed the bird and Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is going to hunt him down.

  3. Rebecca B says:

    Dear Mrs. Teitelbaum,
I think that ”Have no friends not equal to yourself.” means that you shouldn’t have friends that don’t respect who you are. Real trustworthy friends, treat you the way you want to be treated. I felt bad for Auggie, but with people like Summer (one of his friends from the book), he made his way to the top, and people began to respect him.
    Love,
    Rebecca

  4. Rachel .l says:

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a mongoose. He is very curious. He likes to explore a lot. Tomorrow I think Rikki-Tikki-Tavi will fight a snake and win.

  5. Jamie says:

I think the third precept means treat others the way you want to be treated. I say this, because of the quote: “Have no friends not equal to yourself.” —Confucius. I think it means to not be the leader and boss a friend around. They need to have equal “rights” in the friendship.

  6. Sydney says:

Rikki- Tikki_ tavi is a young mongoose. He is very curious and has been now ( adopted) from a family that found him.

Next in the book, I think that Rikki-Tikki- tavi will fight Nag, while everyone is watching including cha chunga, Darzy, and the nice family that (adopted) him. Because of the disagreements of having Rikki was taking place, he still will stand by that family and protect them.

  7. Montgomery Phillips says:

Rikki-tikki-tavi is a very courage’s , and energetic mongoose. He has a pink nose and eyes. He goes around checking out every single noise he hears. I think tomorrow rikki-tikki-tavi is going to find Nag (who ate darzi’s egg) and consult him about what he did or rikki tikki tavi is going to fight Nag.

  8. Sarah C says:

Rikki Tikki Tavi is a Mongoose and has been rescued by a family and they want him/her to keep them safe from the snakes.
I think he will kill the snake.

  9. Max says:

ricki ticki has found a home with the people and has met darzi the bird and tomorrow I think ricki ticki will help darzi find the person that took his eggs.

  10. Gil s says:

I think “have no friends not equal to yourself” means that if have a birth defect so be it. Other kids have problems too, but August’s stand out and if you can’t have friends that can live with the way you look, find some new friends who can.

  11. Lily H says:

Rikki Tikki Tavi is a short story from the Jungle Book’s collection of short stories. It is about a curious mongoose who was saved by a human family when his bungalow was flooded over. From where our class left off reading, Rikki Tikki Tavi had just met Darsy a tailor bird whose baby had been eaten by a vile snake named Nag. I predict that Rikki Tikki Tavi and Nag are going to clash.

  12. Rachel.o says:

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a mongoose who has been found by a little boy. The little boy took him inside his house and is now kind of taking care of him. Rikki-Tikki is very curious so he roams around the house a lot. He tried sleeping with the little boy, but his mom got very worried that he would get hurt and his dad thought he would be completely fine.
Darzi, a bird, who is friends with Rikki-Tikki, had a baby bird in his nest but he fell out of his nest and was eaten by something. They don’t know who ate the baby bird. I think tomorrow we will find out, that the thing that ate the little bird, was possibly another mongoose.

  13. Elior says:

    Dear Mrs. Tietelbaum,
I think that ”Have no friends not equal to yourself.” means that if you have a friend, you shouldn’t act like you’re the bigger man in the relationship. Always treat your friends how you want to be treated. Auggie’s first real friend was Summer. Once Summer got past the fact of Auggie’s looks, she realized how smart, creative, talented, and funny he really was. They were equal friends and I hope I have a great relationship with all of my friends. Don’t take friends for granted.

  14. Lance.S says:

•Rikki-tikki-tavi got his nickname from his war cry rik tik tik
•Family saved him from being flood washed
•modo for a mongoose was run and find out
•rikki is very curious and energetic
    • Rikki was told to avoid white man
•family gave him raw meat and then layed in the sun to dry off
•spent all day roming around the house
•almost drowned in the hot tub and burt his nose on a cigar
•rikki-tikki-tavi was annoying when the sun was trying to sleep
•Mom is worried that rikki is dangerous
•dad is fine with rikki-tikki-tavi being in the room because the dad thinks that if a snake came in the room Rikki would save the boy.
    •Rikki went into the garden
•Rikki saw Darsi’s nest and she was crying because one of her kids fell out of the nest and was eaten by a snake named Nag.

  15. Zoe M. says:

    Mrs. Teitelbaum,
I think that, “Have no friends not equal to yourself,” means do not have friends that think of themselves as superior to you. You do not want your friend to look down on you. A person would not be a true friend if they look down on you. All friends should think of each other as equals. You can tell all of your secrets to equals while you can’t tell them to someone who thinks they are better than you. Two people cannot be true friends if one of them is the leader and the other just follows around doing what the other one says. I felt badly for Auggie because almost everybody looked down on him and thought they were better than he. However, he was the better person because he had a better heart.

  16. Sarah S. says:

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a curious mongoose. He loves to explore and was found by a boy who thought he was dead. His curiosity led him to a garden where he found birds whose egg was eaten by Nag, a cobra. I think Rikki-Tikki-Tavi will fight Nag and win, but not eat him.

  17. jolie Weiss says:

This quote means to have friends that are equal to you. Being equal means they have common interests and common dislikes. You don’t have to pretend you’re something that you’re not. August was his true self and treated people the way he wanted to be treated. People liked him for who he really was not the way he looked. It’s always good to have true friends.

  18. Reesa Zaifert says:

This story takes place during a war. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a mongoose, and he got his name because his “war cry” sounded like “rik tik tik.” Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is energetic, friendly, and very curious! Where we left off, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi had just been fed “some boiled egg”, and and he started roaming in the garden. He ended up under Darzee the bird’s nest who was worried about her baby that had fallen down. Darzee told Rikki-Tikki-Tavi that her baby’s egg had been eaten.
I think the part that is going to come up next is that without him knowing, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi ate Darzee’s baby’s egg, and gets in a fight with Darzee.

  19. Hannah says:

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a mongoose. From what we have read so far, he seems brave, curious, and calm. For tomorrow, I think that “Nag” will turn out to be a snake who ate one of the baby birds, but I think Rikki-Tikki will scare the snake away.

  20. Zachary S says:

    Dear Mrs. Teitelbaum

I think that Have no friends not equal to yourself means, to have friends who share the same interest as you. Like all or mostly all of the same things. Also it means, have friends who care about you and you care about them, not just themselves. Even though Auggie has a birth defect and kids wouldn’t talk to him, or look at him, he would still treat them with respect. You should always treat your friends how you want to be treated.

    Your Student,
    Zachary

  21. Brianna G says:

Rikki-Tikki Tavy is the main character in a book taken from the jungle book. He is a mongoose. He is alike and not alike to other mongoose at the same time. He is adventurous and curious like the others, but he takes it to the extreme. He becomes close with a human family who took him in, not knowing if he was dead or alive. The last part we read today was about birds who’s egg was taken from them and eaten, by a snake. I think what will happen next is that Rikki-Tikki Tavy will fight the snake, and will win. He will do this to protect the birds.

I’m a bit confused, because the other comments say he is different because he is curious. I thought the book said that other mongoose were like that.

    Answer to 6th grade:
I think the quote means that everyone is equal.

  22. Jilliyn C says:

Rikki Tikki Tavi took place during the war. Rikki Tikki is a mongoose. A family has just brought him into their home. The mom thinks he dangerous and the father thinks he’s fine. One day he heard a loud screech, it was Darzi a bird. He went to go see what was wrong, the eggs were stolen out if her nest. I think Rikki Tikki will help Darzi find her baby birds.

  23. Joshua F. says:

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi was gentle to the family. He did not hurt them in anyway. The parents were cautious with Rikki Tikki Tavi sleeping right next to their child, but he was gentle. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi was also curious and perky. He is probably angry with Narg for what he did to Darzy’s child. He will probably hurt Narg and get revenge for Darzy and her husband.

  24. Daniel n says:

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a very hyperactive, curious, wild mongoose. He met a boy who took care of him and was very nice to him. On his exploration Rikki-Tikki-Tavi found a family of birds who’s baby bird got eaten. I think tomorrow while we read Rikki-Tikki-Tavi will help and most likely find who ate the baby bird and help get revenge!

  25. Benjamin says:

What I think about a friendship is about two or more people who have the same interests and are alike. If you are friends with a person who is less important than you then that person will discover you are just like him/her. You do not want that to happen. If you are friends with a person who is more important than you then you would become resentful and become jealous of that person’s accomplishments. In Auggie’s case, he was at the bottom or in other words, least popular. The only kids who became friends with him are Jack and Summer and they were not that popular (though Summer was invited to a party with popular kids).

  26. Shira D says:

I think he is very curious!! and i think he will make new friends and be very friendly! If he doesn’t like anybody he will kill them!

  27. Josh says:

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a crazy mongoose. He got his name because he says Rikki-Tik-Tik. I think that he will fight the nag and he will beat him.

  28. Jake G. says:

Rikki-Ticki-Tavi is a hyper, adventurous, curious, mongoose. He is exploring a house. The people inside give him food, shelter, and they all love him. It says in the begginning of the story, “This is the tale of the great war that Rikki-Tikki-Tavi fought, single-handed…” I believe that tomorrow Rikki-Tikki-Tavi will fight this “great war” against Nag and Nagina, with advice from ChuChundra.

  29. Sabrina M. says:

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a mongoose. Mongooses are naturally very curious creatures, and Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is no exception. He is energetic, friendly, and very curious. One day, a summer flood carries him away, and he ends up being ‘adopted’ by a nice family. However, while exploring the garden, he hears Darzee the bird and his crying because Nag had eaten their baby egg. But who is Nag?

I think that Nag is a snake and Rikki-Tikki-Tavi will end up fighting him.

    • noah.r says:

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a mongoose. When we searched them up in class we saw pictures of them eating and killing cobras/snakes. I think what will happen tomorrow is that Rikki-Tikki-Tavi will fight Nag and Nag’s evil wife and kill them both.

  30. Talya.p says:

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a very curious mongoose and he will probably try to eat Nag the snake because his natural extinct is to try to kill a snake. But the Nag will try to fight to so there will be a compromise in the middle of the fight.
