A Quick Sample of Our 5th Grade Compositions

5th Grade composed sentences using the 7 note letters (CDEFGAB). See here:http://mjgds.org/classrooms/music/2012/09/27/7-letter-sentences-with-5th-grade/

Using Finale Notepad…each student’s list of sentences was transformed into a simple musical composition. Here’s a quick sample of some of the work (wait until you see what they’re working on next!)

Check out their blogfolios while you’re at it!

Not-so-English Madrigal

Who would’ve thunk??? We started our unit on English music with Lute music from 1550. After a brief nap, we listened to some “English” madrigal. I use the term “English” lightly since the only thing English about this madrigal was that it was sung in English.

I found a really cool English Madrigal-style version of They Might Be Giant’s “Birdhouse in Your Soul.” After the class went bananas over how cool the song was, we decided to do something similar. The students recorded and layered their own voices or sounds to create a class composition, and test out our new MAD PAD app. Pretty fun, huh?
