In Math this week:

We are beginning our unit on “Subtraction”  using manipulatives and other methods to better understand the concept. Take a look at one of the concrete ways we are learning how to subtract (bursting balloons)!

We are completing our introductory unit in Singapore Math on “Addition”  using manipulatives, number bonds, and other methods to better understand the concept of addition. Take a look at one of many ways we have been learning how to add.

We will be discussing various rescue vehicles and how people are rescued at sea. We will focus on our target skills including cause and effect.  We will also review the letter sounds for j and x and their associated letters, continue to learn about the concepts of  two letters that blend to make an initial and final sound,  and the blending of sounds to make words, among other phonics skills.

In Math this week:

We are beginning our unit in Singapore Math on “Addition.”  We will be doing addition using our knowledge of number bonds that we learned last week. We will be using manipulatives, including a dice game, moving from concrete experiences to pictorial to abstract.

We will be discussing various kinds of trains and the concept of “I think I can, I think I can!” We will focus on our target skills including plot and character.  We will also review the letter sound for u and its associated letters and word families, continue to learn about the concepts of  two letters that blend to make an initial and final sound,  and the blending of sounds to make words, among other phonics skills.

In Math this week:  

We are completing our unit in Singapore Math on “Number Bonds.”  We will be finding 2 numbers that make a given number up to the number 10. We will be doing this using beads and other manipulatives moving from concrete experiences to pictorial to abstract.  Check out your child’s number bond on his/her blogfolio similar to the example pictured.

In conjunction with our unit about Antarctica, our class created our own book If I Could Go to Antarctica based on the book we read in class titled If You Could Go to Antarctica. Using all of the information we learned from our guest speaker who showed us her very own video from her trip to Antarctica and through various other sources, including videos and books, we

were able to write our own book.  We are the authors, using conventional spelling and inventive spelling using our phonics skills, and illustrators of this book. On each page you are also able to hear us read our page aloud by clicking on the “microphone.”

We will focus on our target skills including plot and fantasy vs. reality.  We will also review the letter sounds or phonemes of  j, w and their associated letters, continue to learn about the concepts of  two letters that blend to make an initial and final sound, review the short vowel ‘e’ and associated word families, and the blending of sounds to make words, among other phonics skills.

In Math this week:

We are beginning a new unit in Singapore Math on “Number Bonds.”  We will be finding the subsets of a total set for numbers 5-9 and writing two numbers that make a given number, moving from concrete experiences to pictorial to abstract.  Stay posted for examples of number bonds!
