We did this in class using one large grid and by manipulating counters. If you’d like you may give your child 6 counters (beans, coins etc.) and have him/her create a variety of shapes of the 6 counters on the large grid on the left side of the folder and then complete p. 57.

Have your child read the booklet “Animal Friends” to you. Depending on your child you may have him/her read the sight words and the names of the animals or just read the sight words and discuss the first letter of all of the animals.

In Math we are continuing our study of graphs, learning how to read and create them. We began with real graphs, graphs using real items (e.g. fruit loops). Today we began reading picture graphs, graphs that use pictures of objects. Have your child survey family and friends to find out which mode of transportation is preferred in your family. Have him/her draw pictures of the plane, train, or car in each box to indicate how many people prefer that. Please do not have him/her color in the boxes like a bar graph. We will discuss bar graphs later this week.

Sept. 14:

The homework tonight is intended to be done at home instead of at the Enhanced Kindergarten Program. Thank you for your understanding.

In Math we are beginning to graph with ‘real’ items. Today we graphed red and blue teddy bears, red and yellow counters, and crayons and dominoes. We discussed which ones were more or less, greater or fewer.  There is a blank graph in your child’s folder today. Please choose 2 kinds of objects at home to graph on the paper. It can be 2 different kinds of coins, white socks and colored socks, 2 different kinds of pasta, 2 different colored “army men”  etc. Give your child no more than 6 of each item and have him/her graph (put them on the paper from bottom to top) them on the paper graph and count how many he/she has, which one has more/less etc. Please also have him/her draw a picture under each column of the graph of which items were chosen to graph. The paper will be returned blank because it is not a picture graph but a “real” graph using real items. That’s ok! We’ll discuss in class.

In Reading please have your child read the story that is in his/her folder. If your child has Nick the Fix-It Man, have your child circle the words with ck  in them. Discuss this sound.  If your child has Play Together, have your child circle the word the in red and little in blue.

Sept. 13:

In Reading our new sight words are little and the.  Have your child read Little Me! to you and sign and return. Please focus on the sight words I, am, little, and the. When reading the animal words, discuss what letter the word begins with before reading so as not to mistake the word rabbit for bunny etc. If your child’s folder has any other papers for your child to read to you, please do so.

Sept. 12:

We began Unit 2 in our Singapore Math program today. Please discuss Lesson 2.1 with your child emphasizing the numbers 1, 2, and 3 with him/her. On the back have your child count the sets and write the numbers correctly under each set.

In Reading you will find the “Family Times” for this week’s topics, including the amazing words. Please have your child read the booklet “I Am Helping” to you and sign and return it. For those students with an additional book, please have him/her read it to you and sign and return it as well.

Sept. 8:

We are finishing up Unit 1 and our discussions about sorting in Math. Please have your child complete pages 17 & 18 of the Math workbook.

Sept. 7:

Please have your child read the story “Am I?” to you. Point out that sometimes it says “I am. . ” and sometimes it says “Am I. . .” Note the initial consonants for the various animals so that they do not name the goose a duck etc. Have him/her read workbook p. 14 to you and complete p. 13 if it is not finished.

In Math we are continuing our unit on matching and sorting. Have your child cut out the sheep attached to p. 7. Then sort them according to the boxes. You may want your child to color the word “red” and “blue” the appropriate colors. These may be sorted in a variety of ways. Discuss the ways. They are not to be glued down, just discussed!

Coming tomorrow, Scholastic Books!!
