Chapter Challenges Chapter 2

#8 Demonstrator Diva

The first chapter challenge that was presented was by Ilyssa W. Her chapter challenge was Demonstrator Diva.  She demonstrated the Doppler Effect that involves sound waves which made it a valid chapter challenge for our chapter.  The Doppler effect is the frequency of a wave heard by a subject, changing as the item producing the sound moves past the subject.  This was proposed in 1842 by an Austrian physicist named Christian Doppler.

To demonstrate the Doppler Effect Ilyssa took a rope and tied it to a device that made a high- pitch noise.  She turned it on and then begun to swing it around, above her head.  As the device producing the noise came close to us it would sound louder and as it went away it became not as loud.  Then she explained that this is the Doppler Effect.  She also said that depending on where you are according to the object producing the noise, the sound will appear different. Her chapter challenge was very comprehensive and achieved its goal.

6# Chef Surprise

The second chapter challenge that was presented was by Rebecca N. She was assigned Chef Surprise.  When you pick Chef Surprise you have to create something out of food that is of course kosher and has to do with the chapter.

Rebecca decided to make an ear.  She gave us various edible items to create the ear. First she gave us a detailed hand written copy of the ear that she made herself. Then, she gave us the following items:  two pieces of bread, a knife, some frosting, and a plate.  She directed us as to what shapes to cut out the bread into it started to take shape.  She told us to cut out each precise piece of bread to make different parts of the ear.  Then she explained the process of a sound wave traveling to the ear and the steps it takes to get to our brain. I really enjoyed the chapter challenge!

#1 Scientific Dress-Up

Last but not least, the third chapter challenge was presented by Joel C. He was assigned Scientific Dress-Up. When you pick Scientific Dress-Up you have to find a person that has something to do with the chapter and dress up as that person a give a brief summary about that person’s life as it relates to the chapter study.  Joel decided to pick Sir Isaac Newton.  Newton preformed many experiment on light waves, which is what made Newton a possible choice for this assignment.  Newton was known for being an English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, alchemist,  and theologian who is by many considered one of the most influential people in human history.

Joel dressed up in a robe and had a few note cards and begun to talk about Newton. He started off talking about what he accomplished in his life time and what made him so important to humanity.  One of the experiments that Newton performed had to do with light waves and breaking them apart.  Newton took a beam of light and shined it into a prism and many different colors came out instead of the beam of light, so he concluded that white light is made up of many different colors of light.
