Clay Week

Kindergarten students create a song about the cracks in clay.

Kindergartners created pinch pots. First grade created symmetrical butterflies. Second grade create draped bowls and third grader made clay masks.

Clay vocabulary: Slip and score, kiln, fire, slab and glaze.

I have a question…How do you keep the mask from cracking and breaking apart as it drys on the Styrofoam bowl? We just made bowls for our Empty Bowl Project and several have cracked in half as they dried humped over the Styrofoam. The ones slumped into the bowl have weathered fine and we had no problems. Do you have a better way to keep the shape other than Styrofoam? I really can’t afford plaster molds….

I use Laguna 06 clay. When I tried other clays, they cracked. Laguna lets me air dry it without draping cloth over it to slow the drying process down.
