Post of the Week-November 21st

I have chosen two students’ posts for  the Post of the Week,  Lily H, and Sarah S.  The assignment for the Blogging Challenge was to  write about favorite things and both students have done a superior job  following directions and using images to “catch the reader’s eye”.  Great job girls!

Lily’s post:
Opinions make people who they are. Favorite things are opinions. Like maybe your favorite ice cream flavor is someone’s least favorite flavor. You should not judge, or argue with people’s opinions. I will tell you some of my favorite things and please leave a comment with some of your favorite things.

My favorite sport is soccer. My least favorite sport is cheerleading. My favorite animals are dogs and snakes. My least favorite animal is mosquitoes.  My favorite color is turquoise. My least favorite color is pink. I like and dislike these things for different reasons. I have played soccer for a while. Dogs are impressively  smart, cool, cute, etc. Snakes are smart and cool. Turquoise is pretty and calming.

You might think I’m completely crazy with my opinions and favorite things.  I hope you don’t want to argue with me, or call me crazy. These are the things I like and you can’t change me. No matter how much you argue with me I still like the same things. What are your favorite things?

Sarah’s post:
My favorite thing to do is taking care of my pets. I have two cats and one dog. I take my dog for walks. I entertain my cats with toys. I always help my parents when we take my animals to the veterinarian office. My pets are very important to me. I love my pets!

My dog’s name is Purple. (This was my favorite color since I was little and it still is.) My dog is a Shar Pei. Shar Peis are originally from China. Purple has light brown fur and has a brown nose. Most Shar Peis have black noses. Purple has a purple tongue. Shar Peis have curly tails and fur with wrinkles. The older a Shar Pei gets the wrinkles seem to disappear. Shar Peis are known for those features. My dog is very original.

My cats’ names are Cutie Pie and Sweetie Pie. They are opposites in personalities. Cutie Pie is a black female cat and she is very outgoing. Sweetie Pie is black and white male, with a timid personality. Cutie Pie was a kitten that I rescued. I rescued and adopted Sweetie Pie when my family took Cutie Pie to her first vet visit. My cats are the best of friends.

Post of the Week-11/14/11

This week’s Post of the Week” is by Rachel L. In science, we are studying physical and chemical changes and her description of each was excellent. She did a great job of putting the definition of each in her own words. Terrific work, Rachel!

Physical changes are where you can rip a piece of paper in half but it is still a piece of paper. A chemical change is where you can pour two drinks in a cup and the drinks are a different substance. You can pour two different chemicals together that would be a chemical change. You could make a salad but it is still lettuce. That is a physical change.

Post of the Week-SarahS

This week’s “Post of the Week” is by Sarah S. Sarah wrote an insightful post about world hunger.
Wonderful job, Sarah.

The Global Issue I chose is hunger. I chose hunger because it is an important matter. This is a problem in today’s world because in some parts of Africa there is hardly any  food to eat. Many people die from hunger. 32 % of people in Saharan Africa do not eat enough food to eat.  If you do not have much money you can’t buy a lot of food for you and your family. Imagine what life would be like without enough food to eat. “Walk a mile in their shoes.”  There are many organizations that are trying to end world hunger. One of these organizations is the Hunger Project. The Hunger Project is trying to have men and women end hunger today. In the future people should donate food for people who are hungry. If you do this you can save a life. Saving one person’s life from hunger is just like saving the entire world!

Post of the Week-10/24

This week’s post of the week is by Brianna. She did a stellar job reviewing her book The Cupcake Queen by Heather Hepler. Take note how she uses a quote from the book and does not give away the ending. Great job, Brianna!

The title of the book I read is The Cupcake Queen.  The author of the book is Heather Hepler. The genre of the book is a fictional young adult novel. The characters and places are the author’s imagination.

The story opens with a girl named Penny moving from New York to Hog’s Hollow because of her parents divorcing. Once there, Penny’s mom goes to work at the shop her grandma owns. Penny helps her mom with the deliveries. During one of the deliveries to a birthday party there was an accident with the cupcakes. The girl, Charity, becomes angry and she lets Penny know that she will make her life at Hog’s Hollow High School miserable. When Penny starts school she soon discovers that Charity is in the popular crowd. This group of girls are very mean and play continuous pranks on Penny. A girl named Tally comes to Penny’s aide and they become fast friends. Penny likes to go on walks on the beach to relax. There she meets a cute boy named Marcus. Penny and Marcus start to hang out together for walks. They begin to confide in one another. As the story continues, Penny and Tally decide they have had enough of all the pranks and plan to take revenge on Charity and the mean girls. While in the bathroom Tally pretends to not notice the mean girls and directs her words to Penny,”Yes! Lard makes you skinny! No Joke! I have been doing the diet for two weeks and I have already lost ten pounds.” The mean girls believe this and begin to eat large amounts of pig fat. Throughout the book Penny is faced with many obstacles which she overcomes. Penny begins to like her new home and friends in Hog’s Hollow. The last twist comes when Penny has to make a choice of returning to live in NYC with her dad or staying in Hog’s Hollow. Read the book to find out her decision.

The key setting of the book takes place in the cupcake shop. Other settings include the beach, school, and forest. Penny is the main character in the story. Some other key characters are Tally(nice friend), Marcus(love interest), and Charity(mean girl). The theme of this story is to appreciate what you have. Everyone comes across a bump in the road.(In the story Penny has to move to a new place because her parents are getting a divorce.)Not only does Penny have to deal with the divorce, moving, being the new kid, but Penny is the target of the school’s mean girl and experiences bullying. Penny learns that everyone has problems and she is not the only one who has a hard life.

I liked The Cupcake Queen because it was interesting for me to read about a girl like Penny. I liked Penny because she is adventurous, girly, and learns to stick up for herself. I recommend this book for people who like stories that are sad and happy at the same time. I don’t think boys would enjoy this book as much as girls. If you read the book you will find out why the title is The Cupcake Queen. Also, if you read the book and like it Heather Hepler co-authored three other novels with Brad  Barkley (Scrambled Eggs At Midnight, Dream Factory, and Jars Of Glass).
