Action verbs can tell about actions that are physical (walk, carry) or mental (forget, understand).
Forms of the word be (am, is, are, was, were) are often used as linking verbs.
These verbs can be linking verbs: become, seem, appear, feel, taste, smell, and look. ( I feel hungry. The pie smells delicious.) However, some of them can also be used as action verbs. ( Feel this fabric. The dog smells many scents.)

Scientific Method Video
Our fifth and fourth grade classes watched a video about the scientific method. Here are all five steps. Step one: Ask a question. Step two: Form a hypothesis. Step three: Do a experiment. Step four: Write down the results of your experiment. Step five: Draw a conclusion. The last step is the Experimental stage: after you have you hypothesis and you experiment, then you do your experiment again. There was a girl on the movie and she was making a hypothesis just by feeling what is in her kitchen. She also felt wood, a pan, and styrofoam. Then she put an ice cube on all of them. Her hypothesis was that the ice cube would melt the fastest on the warmest thing. The ice cube that was on the warmest thing would melt the slowest. Her hypothesis was wrong. It is ok to reject your original hypothesis and form a new hypothesis.
Skyping with China
Today we skyped with China. This was their first time skyping. Their city’s name is Wuhan. Beijing is nine hundred and sixty kilometers from Wuhan. The population in Wuhan is nine million, seven hundred and the population in China is one billion, three hundred fifty four million, three hundred and seventy thousand, and seven hundred ,and fifty four. There school’s name is Huazhong University. They are six thousand kids in their school. In China, they were very shy. Also, in class, they do not ask questions. There teacher just tells them things and they listen. The students in their class think that Columbus was a hero because he “discovered” America. They think he treated the Native Americans poorly. They think Columbus was smart taking a ship, but not smart running into North America. Also, Marco Polo went East and Columbus went West. The Asians were in America before Columbus. The Asians went through Alaska to get there. The largest river there is The Yangtze River. We have a twelve hour time difference. Isn’t that a lot? Talking to China was a lot of fun.
Science Class- What is a Hypothesis
A Hypothesis is something that you believe will happen before you try it. We all wrote hypotheses about what we think will happen if we tie balloons to a straw that was on a string. My hypothesis was if you tape a balloon to a straw that was on a string, then depending on the amount of air in the balloon will tell you how far the balloon will go. After we tested it out I figured out that the balloon full of air went fast and twisted all the way down the rope. Then we tested it out with a balloon half full of air. It went half way down the rope. After that we tested it out with a balloon with barely any air in it and it went one fourth of the way down the rope. The last thing we tried was to tape two balloons(one on each side) and it went three fourths of the way down the rope. The reason it only went three fourths of the way down the rope is because the two balloons made it too heavy so by the time it had more power it was already slowing down.
Skyping with Argentina
We skyped with Buenos Aires, Argentina. Their teacher’s name is Greta Sandler. On Columbus Day, they are not happy, but sad because they do not like what he did to the Indians. One of the reasons she does like him is because he did not give up. They call Columbus Day The Day of the Race. The president of Argentina is trying to change the name of Columbus Day to The Day of Respect Cultural Diversity.
Skyping with Ukraine
Today we skyped with a school in Ukraine. Their city is called Krivoy Rog. The population is one million. The school’s name is Interclass. They learn English. They live five thousand, five hundred, and forty point four miles away from Jacksonville. Their teacher’s name is Maryna Tsehelska. The students are eleven years old. They are in the seventh grade.
We talked to them about Christopher Columbus. They do not celebrate Columbus Day. They think Columbus is a hero and they do think he discovered America.
