One of our students, Jonah, completed a PowerPoint presentation for his first book report. The class decided that they all wanted to research a time or person in history for the fourth nine weeks in lieu of a book report. They are all going to present a form of multi-media to the class to share their topic. Many students have chosen to do a movie, some have chosen to do a PowerPoint and some are undecided. I wanted to teach the class lessons for using the movie program and the PowerPoint program. Today, Jonah taught the class how to make a PowerPoint presentation. Each student created their own PowerPoint presentation. It was a great learning experience for the class and everyone enjoyed trying out all of the tools within PowerPoint.
Top Posts of the Week!!
Last week, we finished our incredible “Quad Blogging” experience with Switzerland, Czech Republic and Thailand. Each class had the opportunity to be the bloggers and the commenters during our month long experiment. The goal was for the teachers and the students to see improvements in their writing. As a teacher, I can honestly say, it was truly remarkable to see how hard my class worked during these four weeks. They were determined to write quality comments, and they really paid attention to the RUBRIC so they could achieve the “expert” level of commenting. In their commenting, most of my students were writing comments that were one or two sentences long without any true connections to the blogger’s writing. Now my students are writing one to two paragraphs with connections, links and impressive reflections. Regarding their blog posts, most of my class was already writing at an “accomplished” level based on the RUBRIC. They were all so eager to hit the “expert” level, which most of them did achieve. They began to add multi-media, links, more sophisticated vocabulary, and they continued to let their personality shine in their writing.
This week, I allowed the students to reflect on their “Quad Blogging” experience. They had some phenomenal observations to share about their involvement in this experiment. I have chosen two of the best reflections to share as our “Posts of the Week!”

For the past month my class and me have been Quad-Blogging. Quad-Blogging is when Quad [Four] classes get together from all over the world and each week one of the classes blog. The other people would be commenting on that classes blog(s). So that’s what happened, are contestants were Thailand, Switzerland, Czech Republic, and obviously us. The first week it was Thailand’s turn. Our teacher made it so that every kid in that classroom got at least one comment. Rewind, just a week before some teachers in our school gave us a comment rubric to prepare us for the Quad-Blogging. I will show you some examples of before and after. This was a comment that I left for my friend Jake.
Before = Wow. Jake just because of that I know a lot more about G.W.C. You know in second grade my class read a book about G.W.C., but I think your little summery was way more sufficient. This was a comment I made to somebody on the Thailand blog.

Wow. That was a really good post. At my school I have P.E. three times a week. The days that I have P.E. are Tuesday-Thursday. I think you and I have a lot in common. I think I’m pretty good at ping pong and in P.E. class we were studying basketball. I love basketball, it’s my favorite sport. There is a big difference isn’t there? So anyways that’s what we were doing for the first week. In the middle of that week I thought that maybe only my class and Thailand were doing this. Then one day I saw a person on one of the blogs from Lucerne, which is in Switzerland. I read the comment and knew it had to be because of Quad-Blogging. The next week I was starting to get a bit lazy. Oh yes my comments were still very quality its just that I wasn’t doing any links. The other problem was that all the other classes in the Quad-Blogging thing took English as there second language, so a lot of what they wrote was limited because they don’t have as many words to express themselves. Also many of the words were misspelled so it was hard to understand. The Czech kids were third graders so they only had a few posts. It took me days to leave them a quality comment. I will show you. Here it is. Dear Sahib, It wasn’t one of my favorite books, but I might try again when I’m older. Anyways, last year in our reading books, my class stumbled on a little story about Winn-Dixie. It was about how Opal made friends with this librarian and the librarian [who had had a bad experience with bears] thought that Winn-Dixie was one. The third week was an ordinary week except for one thing Friday was a special day because Rebecca’s grandpa came in. He, in my opinion is an expert commenter so we all were happy, he told us about his life and how he was good at commenting. He was very modest and used a high vocabulary of words. My second favorite part was when he told about when he had been a social worker and that in school the teachers promoted high vocabulary. My favorite part was when he said that he had seen my blog. I’ll show you a comment he left me.
Thank you Itamar for helping me to learn so much about Michael Jordan. In fact I am going to read more about him your book report inspired me to want to. I have always admired Michael Jordan and knew that he lead an amazing life. Itamar your book report indeed let me see what an amazing life Michael Jordan had. I found it interesting to learn that Michael Jordan worked hard to achieve good grades and to do well in school. Michael was indeed very intelligent because he realized education is important and his remaining modest even with his tremendous success is a great tribute. Itamar I too particularly love reading a book that is so well done that I do not want to put it down until I am finished. I am glad you enjoy reading Itamar, reading is very important. You can be proud of your book report and that you are a reader. It’s amazing isn’t it? The last week I did lots of blogging and it was really fun. Before I start talking about quad blogging, you need to know what it is. Your guess is probably four people, who blog together, but no. It’s WAY more than that!
Quad blogging is when four classroom blogs blog, and comment on each other’s blogs. There are four weeks, and four classroom blogs from around the world, with student blogs linked to it (Czech Republic, Switzerland, Thailand, and of course us, USA). Each week one class posts, and the three other classes comment on that blog. That’s how it works each week.
Now that you have an idea of what quad blogging is, let me tell you a little about our class’s experience with quad blogging.
With our class during quad blogging, we used a commenting and post writing rubric, which would tell you what you need to do to become an “expert” blogger. From the rubric I feel that my entire class (including me) has improved on not only writing skills, but also expressing our feelings about the post we are writing or commenting on, and putting it into our work, in a creative manner. This experience is fantastic for our learning in creative writing, and really made me change from “capable” to “expert”.
I loved this experience, because I got to “meet” new people through my favorite type of writing, blogging. I met Sine, Angelina, Jessica, Nalin, Samantha, Tess, Anezka, Emilka R, and Amandine through this wonderful program.
I truly will cherish this experience of quad blogging from now, till whenever there will be a touch-screen TV! (:

Great Posts during our “Blogging” Week
If I Were to go to Mars……. by Zoe
If I were to go to Mars my trip on the way there would be very fast and not at all bumpy. As soon as I get off the spaceship, I put my feet on the ground. The ground is very soft. It feels like sand under my feet. The planet itself is very strange and peculiar. It has a few flowers, but it is almost like the desert although it is not hot.
The only forms of life are the flowers and a few strange creatures that look like flying puppies. I am deciding to call them fluppies. My surroundings are dreary and they make me feel lonely. I immediately take pictures of everything. I can’t wait to go back and show my boss the pictures!
My Personal Assistant For A Week by: Zachary
In class we have an assignment that we get to choose an assistant for a week. The names that we could choose are William Shakespeare, Albert Einstein, Socrates, Benjamin Franklin, and Steve Jobs. I chose Steve Jobs because, he can give me a lot of stuff from Apple headquarters. He could give me an iPad3 and he can give me an iphone5. Steve Jobs can get me to work for Apple and he could pay me a lot of money. The projects that Steve Jobs can do for me is to make an Ipad4s, Iphone5s, and a iPod touch with siri. I love Steve Jobs because he is a great person and he invented stuff that I have. Thats my personal assistant for a week? Who would choose? What project would they work on?

NASA just realized that there is life on mars. You and I have been chosen to find out what it is. Quickly, to the space ship. In 10, 9, 8, . . . 7, 6, 5, 4, . . . 3, 2, 1 . . . Lift Off! Wow! Look, it is Saturn. NASA announced, ” Rebecca, tell your team mate that you will have to activate hyper sleep. Mars is to far away. Activate it in 5 minutes. Roger that?,” I replied roger that, over and out. Goodnight partner, activate hyper sleep now! Five months later. . . Good morning sleepy head! We are here and it is October 10, 2012. Lets get in our space suits. Mars looks really red, doesn’t it? The ground is really rocky and bumpy. Wait! Don’t use the rover because I would get car sick. Plus, it would be a rough ride. OK? Don’t you feel proud of yourself for doing this? I feel great! Look! There is a little bit of water over there! Lets check it out. Oh no! Take a picture quickly. Right there, before our eyes was a green, slimy, weird looking alien.

For those who don’t know what spam is, spam is when you e-mail, comment, or leave a tweet, that has a bad word, has a link to a site that has nothing to do with the post, and if someone is talking about something other than the post. So from what I just said, the main idea is that spam is not good.
On a blog that I commented on, there were spam tests. Before you post your comment you must go through the spam test. I thought that these were kind of cool because if you read what the spam tests say, they all have funny, but true words on them. Here are a few.
Super hero By:Itamar
This week we have been assigned to be a super hero and tell what we would do. Well I would be a super hero who lived in Gotham city. My super powers would be laser vision, invisibility, and telekinesis. First I would rescue people and work as an under cove cop. I would walk around the back alleys and learn about the bad guy under world. Then one day I would capture the Joker and reveal to the world that I have super powers. My only rival would be Batman so I would capture him and use my telekinesis powers to make a small but sturdy cage fly to me, so I could cage him. from then I would become the ruler of justice in Gotham. Then one day I was called off to New York by a super hero called Spider Man. There was a plot being made by an organization named the Hydra. The plot would be big, but I would solve it and become famous.

If I had a Personal assistant I would pick Benjamin Franklin. I would pick Benjamin Franklin to be my personal assistant because he would help me with my writing assignments. He was the editor of a newspaper so he would use his skills to help me. I also picked him because we share the same name. We also like to invent stuff. We could discuss our thoughts with each other. These are some of the many reasons I chose Benjamin Franklin.

If I went to Mars I would be so excited. I would be floating in the air in the space shuttle. When I would turn 28 years old, that is when they will start sending space shuttles to Mars. Rain used to fall on Mars, but now Mars is a dry planet. In the center of Mars, there is a huge volcano. If there would be life, I will hope it will be an alien. I believe about aliens. It can’t be possible that we are the only types of aliens in the universe. I would also want to see, plants, food, and water on Mars. Where would you go, deeper in the universe, or going to Mars? I would go deeper in the universe, because I want to see aliens.

Here is a picture of Steve Jobs. As you can see, he lived in 1955-2011. If you are on an Apple computer, then thank Steve Jobs because he created it. Do you have any Apple products at your home? ( Such as a laptop, iPhone, or iPad.) Once again thank Steve Jobs. I would choose Steve ( If he was alive because he is dead.) as my personal assistant because he was a spectacular inventor. He brought happiness not only to me and my family but also to other people, and he could teach my class a lot about electronics.
Lets just pretend that he was alive and he came to my class. I would have have Steve share some knowledge to help my class with typing and help me do better with computers. Then we can share the knowledge we’ve gained with other people, if it is all right with Steve. I would give him a project on the computer. I would make him do a time line on what he has created, and his life. I would also want him to write directions on how to make an Apple product. It would amazing to my dad and I because we both admire him. We almost have all of his Apple products. When I grow up, I hope I will be just like him.

My Favorite School Subject
What is your favorite school subject? Why is that your favorite subject? My favorite school subject is math. My favorite school subject is math because I like math, and we use math every single day and night. Albert Einstein used math for his inventions and used to make Atomic Energy. Atomic energy helped us win World War II. Math is everything. Numbers, desimals, algebra, multiplication, division, area, perimeter ,and square roots are used for building houses, buldings stadiums, and much more. That is why math is my favorite subject. Quality Commenting
When you comment on my blog I want your comments to be memorable. I want them to represent you, so even if I don’t know you, I will feel as if I do. When you comment on a blog you want it to be unique. To make it a quality comment it has to have fancy words such as instead of writing, “That is a pretty butterfly.”which is what 1st graders could do ,write” What a lovely butterfly! I love how its wings are all sparkly. I would enjoy it if you could teach me how. Did you know that a butterfly’s wing is its most fragile part?” That already is a better comment. To make a comment better, add on to the post, writing a new bit of information, it makes it a quality comment. Also, links help, if you find a website that has something to do with the topic someone is blogging about, put the link. Here is how you put a link on your blog:

Jump Rope For Heart

For the last three weeks, we were jump roping. There is something called the century club. That is when you do 100 jumps without stopping. For some people it is hard, but for me is a little easy. I got in the century club on my first try. After I made the century club, I tried to go above 100 and I did, I did 108 jumps. The next day, Ben made it to the century club. He did 106 jumps. After that I tried to go above 108 and I did, I did 200 jumps. The next day, Evie got into the century club. She did 223 jumps. After that, I tried to regain my record in the class, but I did not just regain my record in my class, Elior told me that I was the best in the school, because I did 310 jumps. The only one in the school that can do more than me is my P.E coach, but he is not a student. On jump rope for heart day, I tried to do 100 jumps from a very tiring way and I did. Me, Ben, and Jamie got prizes, because we were jumping the whole time. I hope you like to jump rope. Bye! ![]()
Parsha presentation – Vayakhel Pekuday
Last week was the first of four weeks in the Jewish year, in which we read two Parshiyot (Torah Portions) in the same week. Justin and Liam decided to challenge the students to create the Mishkan (Tabernacle) from play-dough. First they summarized the Parshiyot and then gave the students the option to create their own Mishkan (a place where they feel close to God) or re-create the Mishkan from the Torah. This really challenged the students to remember every thing they learned from the past five parshiot about building the Mishkan and use their own imagination.
