Yoni took it a step ABOVE the original assignment.  Instead of writing one paragraph to persuade his readers about Kapok trees, he wrote five paragraphs!!  Way to go above and beyond Yoni!

Should People Cut Down Kapok Trees? No!!!

Posted on February 2, 2012 by yonih

There is a question going on in my class.  This question is.  Should people cut down kapok trees.  Now you will now why I said no.

First, a kapok tree is a big home for a lot of animals.  If you cut it it will destroy their home.  If you do not want to that to happen DO NOT CUT IT DOWN!!!  So the creatures will not have to find another home.

Second, trees make oxygen.  Without oxygen no one will be able to survive.  The leaves clean the air so we can breath.  A kapok tree is a big tree so it has a lot of leaves so it cleans more air.  If you cut down kapok trees there will be less oxygen.  If you do not want that to happen DO NOT CUT IT DOWN!!!  So that will not happen.

Third, Kapok trees can make fruit.  So people, and animals can eat.  With no food you cannot survive.  That is how you get fruit.  If you cut it down there will be less fruit.  If you do not want that to happen DO NOT CUT IT DOWN!!!  So their will be more fruit.

Fourth, Trees are good for water.  When the rain comes trees will get the water, and it will fall from leaf, to leaf.  When it gets to the last leaf an animal could be waiting so it will not drink from the dirty ground it will drink, instead it gets to its mouth.  If their would not be any kapok trees, the animals would have to drink from the dirty ground , they could get sick.  If you do not want that to happen DO NOT CUT IT DOWN!!!  So the animals can be healthy.

Fifth, kapok trees are beautiful.  So the rain forest can be very beautiful.  People would like to visit rain forests that is beautiful.  If you cut them down, there would be no beauty, and people would not visit rain forests.  If you do not want that to happen DO NOT CUT IT DOWN!!!  So people will visit rain forests, and each rainforest will be beautiful.

What do you think?  Yes, or no?

Way to go ELIOR!!

Way to go ELIOR!!

This week I chose Elior’s blog post as our POST OF THE WEEK!  The assignment was for the students to write a persuasive paragraph on whether or not Kapok trees should be cut down.  The students had to choose a side and write a convincing paragraph on their decision.  Elior wrote a post about why Kapok trees should NOT be cut down!

Should People Cut Down Kapok Trees?

Posted on February 2, 2012 by eliorl

No, people should not cut down Kapok trees because any kind of tree is good for the  earth. If you cut down a tree it is like destroying a world.  Also, if you cut down Kapok trees, you are destroying many animals’ food and shelter.  Sometimes humans can be selfish about those kinds of things.  Plus, when a Kapok tree is cut down, it is destroying some of the Amazon Rain Forest and rain forests are good for the earth.  Cutting down one Kapok tree could lead to cutting down another Kapok tree.  Think of yourself as a Kapok tree.  How would you like it a person cut you down?  That’s what it feels like for Kapok trees.  Therefore, I think that you should not cut down Kapok Trees.

Election Day!

Election Day!

Yesterday was election day! On election day, we all gathered in the synagogue and we listened to all the speeches! I was running for secretary. Before I went up to the bima, I was a little nervous, but after the fact, I felt really good about it.  Morah Eta expected some things like being responsible, having written good notes, and so on. Since I was running for secretary I had a few more responsibilities than some of the other jobs. For one thing, I was going to have to take notes for the school! I thought this was going to be a great experience for me because I’m now the school’s secretary!

VPK Buddy Visit

VPK Buddy Visit

Yesterday, we got to see our VPK buddies again. During our visit we had three stations to go to Chanukah Bingo, edible dreidels, and we played dreidel. We would go with our buddies to each of the stations. After, we went to all the stations we gave them a Chanukah present. A book! We read those books to them until the end of our visit. Our buddies were so cute and we all had a great time!

During our interview with Dick Kravitz, each student was given a “job”.  We had five students interviewing Dick Kravitz,  one student in charge of being the videographer, one student was our photographer, and three students were on a private backchannel site documenting the interview.  Stay tuned to see more results!

Another Jewish Day School

Another Jewish Day School

One of our fourth graders was fortunate enough to take a family trip to England.  She was able to visit another Jewish Day School while she was in London.  She created a Venn Diagram to compare our school with their school.  She presented it to the class today.  The rest of the class was able to ask her additional questions.  She is preparing her blog post to share more exciting events from her trip.

Researching On The IPads

Researching On The IPads
  • Go to Wikipedia
  • Here is a shortcut…..Click on the google box at the top, while on wikipedia.  Look at the bottom of the box after you type in what you want to search.  Then click on where it says the word you searched, at the bottom where it says number of matches.  That word will be highlighted in yellow.
  • Quote the word(s) (on google)  and it will be exactly what you wanted to search for.

For anything you want to come from lets say “.net”,   put “site:.net” in quotes, that way nothing that is not a .net website will pop up.

  • .com=commercial which means everyone wants to sell something
  • .net=network- good information but people can add to it
  • .org=organization- very much like .net
  • .edu=education-only educational things
  • .gov=government-all pics are public domain

Happy Birthday Rebecca!

Happy Birthday Rebecca!

Yesterday was Rebecca’s birthday!  She is 10! Double digits!  This coming year, how old are you going to be?
Rebecca brought in doughnuts, and in my opinion, they were really good!

When is your birthday?  Birthdays are always fun! It’s one day of the whole entire 365 day year that you get to celebrate the day you were born.  My birthday is coming up soon!  If your birthday is soon, what are you doing for it?

I want to hear from you.  If you have a question for me about my birthday, leave me a comment.  If you have something I didn’t ask about your birthday, then leave a comment.  See you next time!

The banana experiment

The banana experiment

On Tuesday we did an experiment with a bag and some sliced banana in it and  a bag with some banana and yeast in it. Then Mrs.Teitelbaum told us that yeast was in the fungi family. We had to make predictions of what we thought would happen.  Then on Wednesday we looked at the bananas. It looked like the one without yeast was decomposing faster. On Thursday we looked at the bananas and it was hard to tell which one was decomposing faster. On the last day of the experiment she told us that the one with the yeast had decomposed faster. That means that my predictions were correct. Yay! Maybe you should try this sometime.
