When the 5th graders came to our class to talk about commenting and communicating through blogs, it began as a presentation – but it wound up as a great-big, noisy collaborative workshop. We explained what they were going to do, then paired each 5th grader with a 3rd grader or 2. Once they were settled at their laptops, the conversations began and the productivity level shot up. At that point, there was nothing left for the teachers to do, but walk around marveling and taking pictures…

Art show and Hebrew QR codes

This Tuesday, May, 21st, MJGDS will host our annual Talent show and new this year Art Show. On display will be the portraits created by the students in Art class. Each portrait will have a QR code in Hebrew recorded by the students.

We just had a visit from the amazing/sensational/exceptional 5th graders. They told us in their own words what was important about commenting on blogs.

We have realized that the comments we make on blogs must be held to a higher standard than people outside our school. While we are happy to hear from friends, relatives and others on our blogs, we do not expect them to strive for the same excellence as we do in our comments.

Thanks, Zoe for sharing your blog on quality commenting with us. Thanks 5th graders for sharing your expertise with us. You have given us the gift of inspiration, that we hope to return through our comments and our blogs.

During Jewish Studies today, we wrote our first blog post about a Mitzvah that we learned from Avraham in Parshat (Torah portion) Vayera. We also learned to use the Hebrew keyboard and incorporate Hebrew into our blog post.

Weekly Torah service

Every Thursday afternoon Kitot Bet and Gimmel (2nd and 3rd grades) pray together and have a Torah service which is led by Hazzan Holzer. The students take turns carrying the Torah and all of the students have an Aliyah where they sing the Torah blessings with the Hazzan and hear a portion of the week’s Torah reading. We look forward to the Torah service every Thursay.

Our Hebrew ebooks

We are so excited to share our first Hebrew ebooks with you. Each student in the class wrote an “About Me” Hebrew book. Morah Liat photographed the pages in the book and then each student recorded themselves reading their story.

If you own an iPad or iPhone, you can download the ebook and directly drop them into your iTunes library. Once you sync your device with iTunes, you will be able to read our ‘About Me’ book.

The Big “G”

We’ve been exploring capacity. We’ve been converting between cups, pints, quarts and gallons. Here’s what we’ve learned: It’s frustrating. But here’s one way we like to make it easier:

Ask your child to show you how they use the big “G” to figure out capacity.

Third Graders – I challenge you to make up a word problem with c, pt, qt, gal – and help a friend or family member solve it!
