WELCOME TO KITAH BET!!!

I am SO excited to be teaching your child this year. Kitah Bet is a year
full of fun learning. We will have hands- (and mouths-) on learning.

Below I have listed all of the materials that we will be using this year:

Hebrew Language Skills:
Tal Am Curriculum
Book One – School and home vocabulary
Chagai Tishri and Chanukah – Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur
Sukkot, Simchat Torah and Chanukah
Tu B’Shvat and Purim
Pesach
Israel

Kriah and Tefillah These books reinforce phonetic reading skills. Students will read in class every day. They will then be encouraged to read to you at home in the evenings. Please allow your child to read at home. Initial any page that they read to you for bonuses that will be traded in for small prizes. The best way to master reading is to practice!

Derech Chochma – This is the 2nd book we will use for phonetic reading skills.

Tefillah:
We have a daily service in our classroom on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. On Thursdays we have services with the third grade in the small chapel. One of the Rabbis, the Cantor or Scott Zimmerman reads Torah for us at this service. On Fridays we have our Kabbalat Shabbat service in the chapel. In addition to our services we have a set list of tefillot (prayers) that are to be mastered in 2nd grade. We will learn these prayers word by word in class so that everyone can master them. Second grade students love to master prayers, so this is actually a great part of our day.

Bible:
We will be learning the first chapters of the Book of Bereshit (Genesis). We are using
Tal Am’s Chumash program. This is a colorful, exciting program that compliments our Hebrew language program. We will also be learning the portion of the week from My Weekly Portion. This book teaches the basics of the portion of the week and highlights one value per portion.

Story time:

Our stories will focus on midot (values), holidays, folktales and midrashim.

Recess:

I take the children out for 10 minutes every day. We go to the large playground so that the children can enjoy lots of space and equipment.

Watch for my weekly letter that will be posted on the blog every week, which will have information about what we did, and what is coming in the week ahead. I will also let you know if there is anything you need to send in. I will give you as much notice as possible whenever students need to bring anything in.

This is going to be an amazing year!
