לשנה טובה L’Shana Tova!!!   Happy New Year!

We were so happy to see many of you here for Open House.  We are thrilled with the way the school year is progressing and each day we are grateful to be teaching your children.  Hope you received your New Year’s card from your children (with the apple and honey on the front) and DON’T FORGET……please listen to them sing the song inside.   :)

(and continuing to do good through the year!)  We will throw away all the bad things at תשליך  Tashlich (ceremony where we go to the pond and throw pieces of bread in to the water to represent gettting rid of the bad).  FYI   There is a Tashlich ceremony on the first day of Rosh Hashana at 6 PM for anyone who needs it (including Morah Rachel!).

סליחה Selicha  Please forgive us for anything we might have done this year.  All of us will be better people in 5772!

יום הכיפורים  Yom HaKippurim    Day of Atonement on 10/7-10/8

Our class knows that we are still too young to fast the whole 24 hours but we can refrain from eating junk food or snacking to remind us that it is Yom Kipppur and it’s our time for :

תשובה  Teshuva repentance

תפילה Tefilah  prayer

צדקה Tzedakah  charity and doing good things

It may be a fast day for adults but it’s a slow day for us!!!

And we have lots to look forward to in the next few weeks.  Once again, if there is someone who has a Sukkah and lives nearby we would love to come visit your Sukkah on our Sukkah Hop.  Let us know!

חתימה טובה Hatimah Tova    Greeting on Yom Kippur

May you have a good “sealing” and an easy fast!

AR Info

Our class will be visiting the library on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings to have a special reading time with Mrs. Leonard.  She will hold a mini-book group and then assist your child in selecting a book for his/her individual reading level (Accelerated Reader.) Your child should read their chosen book and bring it back to school the following Tuesday or Wednesday. Mrs. Leonard will then help your child learn how to take AR tests to check comprehension of the books he/she is reading. It is our goal to help your child continue to maximize his/her reading potential by adding this special reading time to the weekly schedule.

Important Highlights:

-Books will be checked out in addition to a library book picked on Fridays.

-Books should not be returned until the following Tuesday or Wednesday (depending on your child’s assigned date) since they are needed for AR testing.

-Your child is responsible for reading the story on her/her own.

-AR books, and special reading time with Mrs. Leonard, are in addition to our reading group conducted in class during reading centers.

Bonus Spelling Words

This week we have two additional words that as a class we decided to add to our spelling list.  They are high frequency words found in our whole group reading story. Please help your child practice the words “eat” and “this.” If your child correctly spells the words he or she will get bonus points.  If the words are spelled incorrectly no points will be deducted.  We will have bonus spelling words throughout the year to add extra challenges and fun to the lists! :)

Math Tests

Today you will find a math test in your child’s folder. We are so proud of the class and their accomplishments and hard work. Please review the test with your child and help your child correct any incorrect questions.  We ask that you reinforce what we told the students today in class–we learn from our mistakes and we’ll keep working on the skills. All tests should be signed, corrected and returned to school tomorrow.  Thank you for your support.

-Continue our reading groups and centers. (Please keep in mind that the reading selections start off a bit slow allowing the children to gain confidence in fluency. The selections will become more difficult as the year progresses–this is planned!  The goal of reading groups is to have children reading text at a level where he/she is able to apply reading skills and gain comprehension without losing fluency rate.)

-Practice our spelling words (nap, naps, sit, sits, win, wins, fit, fits, hit, hits, her, too.)

-Focus on word choice and word order in our writing.

While working on math homework, please help challenge your child to explain WHY and HOW they are solving the problems.

-Begin wrapping up our butterfly life cycle unit by creating a class book to share our discoveries and observations with you.

Week of Sept. 19— Jewish Studies

אריאות  Ariyot  Don’t we just love playing on our Smartboard and enjoying all the fun stuff with Ariyot??  Thanks to Kim Glasgal Levy for making this happen (again!!!).  Don’t worry…. you’ll get to see this in action when you attend Back to School Night on Thursday evening 9/22.   See you there!!

Many of our parents are learning along  with us as we learn the alef-bet.  Keep up the good work!  Reading at home is so important for all to succeed!!

ב Bet (with a dot in the middle) and Vet (without dot)  We  can identify words with Vet like:

צבע   Tzevah    color

צהוב  Tzahove    yellow

לבן  Lavan     white

סבתא  Savta    Grandmother    (This is what Morah Rachel and Morah Hanna are called by their grandchildren!!!  We LOVE being a Savta!!!)

AND NOW  —- presenting the letter:

ג   Gimel

We get to meet more friends and more words with this letter like:

גדי   Gadi    a boy in Morah Shira’s virtual class

גילה  Gila    a girl in Morah Shira’s virtual class

גג   Gag    roof

גב   Gav   Back  (on a body)

גב של גדי  Gav shel Gadi    back of Gadi

גב של גילה Gav shel Gila    back of Gila

גן  Gan   playground

At this point we are also introduced to vowels that makes the sound–

EEEEEE      and meet new friends:

בינה  Bina   a girl in Morah Shira’s virtual class

אמא  Ema    mother

שנה טובה Shana Tova  Happy New Year  We are now in the month of Elul and soon it will be Tishrei.  The first of Tishrei is Rosh Hashana.

Before we know it, it will also be SUKKOT.  If you are planning on having a Sukkah at your home (and live close to school), we would love to come and visit your sukkah on our annual SUKKAH HOP.  Let us know.  Thanks in advance for any hospitality shown to 18 kids in Kitah Alef!!!

We are working on becoming better people in the new year.  Hopefully this will be evident at school, at home and wherever we go.

טוב  Tov   Good

לא טוב Lo Tov    Not good

We hope to fill up the good side of our scale with good deeds and not fill up the “not good” side EVER!!!  We are working on this daily!  It reminds us of the seesaw on the playground!

Thank you to those parents who have been our “Mystery Readers” on Friday afternoons.  Please sign up with Jennie DeBardeleben to find a Friday convenient for you.   The children look forward to it each week!

Week of Sept. 12—Jewish Studies

פרפר         Parpar     BUTTERFLY     :)   What a great lesson for us!!!

אריאות   ARIYOT continues even as the butterflies fly away and the holidays get closer!  We are practicing our Hebrew reading and it shows!  The next letter we are learning is:

ברק (Barak) a boy’s name (like the President’s!)

בית (bayit) house

סבא (sabba) grandfather

We are thrilled how quickly many of our students are really trying hard in Jewish Studies.  Not only are we learning Hebrew and prayers and this week beginning Rosh Hashana materials, but they are doing mitzvot!   Helping our newest students with their adjustment to our school (and languages), reminding teachers of stuff that we need to remember and just being respectful to each other.   WOW!

Here are some useful words we will be learning for the New Year:
